Commercial brands book everyday looks
Fashion week and magazine covers are a small corner of the industry, and they mostly go through agencies. Most paid modeling work is commercial. A coffee brand needs someone holding a mug in a kitchen. An online store needs someone to wear 40 shirts in one day. A gym app needs someone doing a clean squat on camera.
These jobs do not ask for a height minimum or a famous portfolio. They ask whether you match the product's customer and whether you can do the job well. That is good news if you are starting out.
| Job type | What brands look for | Experience needed |
|---|---|---|
| E-commerce product shoots | Standard sizes, good posture, stamina for many outfits | Low |
| UGC videos | Natural talking on camera, good light at home | Low |
| Commercial lifestyle photos | Relatable look, warm expressions | Low |
| Promotional and event work | Friendly, reliable, comfortable talking to people | Low |
| Fitness content | Real training skill, clean form | Skill based |
| Hand modeling | Even skin tone, steady hands, neat nails | Low, but strict care |
| Runway and editorial | Specific height and measurements, agency ties | High |
You can browse all of these on the modeling jobs board, or go straight to commercial modeling jobs and ugc jobs, where first-timers get booked most often.
Brands book reliability before looks
A brand marketing manager hiring for a product shoot has a budget, a photographer booked and a deadline. Their biggest fear is not that you are not pretty enough. It is that you do not show up, arrive late or freeze on set. When they review applicants, they look for signs that you are easy to work with.
- Your photos look like you today, not three years and two haircuts ago.
- Your measurements and sizes are accurate, so the clothes fit on the day.
- Your availability calendar is current.
- Your application answers the casting, not a copy pasted note.
- You reply to messages within a few hours.
- You are verified, so they know you are a real adult with a real ID.
On PostModels, every model passes ID and age verification before the profile goes live. The Verified badge tells brands you are who you say you are, and it matters more to a hiring manager than a long list of credits.
Simple digitals beat expensive photo shoots
You do not need to pay a photographer to start. Brands want digitals, also called polaroids: plain, unedited photos that show what you really look like.
- A headshot, face straight to camera, hair off the face, one neutral and one smiling.
- A three quarter shot from the knees up.
- A full length shot, front and side.
- Plain fitted clothes in a solid color, such as a black tank top and jeans.
- Minimal makeup, no filters, no heavy retouching.
- Natural daylight from a window, with a plain wall behind you.
Have a friend take them with a phone at chest height, using the back camera. Take them in the morning when light is soft. Update them every few months, or after any big change in hair or weight.
Add two or three lifestyle photos as well, such as you laughing in a cafe or cooking. These help brands picture you in their ad. A Model profile on PostModels holds up to 40 photos and 3 videos, and builds a comp card PDF from your profile automatically.
Measurements and sizes need to be exact
Wrong measurements are the fastest way to lose a rebooking. If a brand brings size medium outfits and you need a large, the shoot day stalls. Measure yourself with a soft tape and be honest.
- Height without shoes
- Chest or bust, waist and hips
- Inseam
- Shirt, dress, pants and shoe sizes
- Hair color and length, eye color
- Tattoos and piercings, with where they are
- Skills, such as fitness training, dance, driving, languages or a musical instrument
Skills matter more than people think. A brand selling running shoes wants someone who actually runs. A cooking brand wants someone who handles a knife well. List what you can really do.
What to bring to an in-person casting
Many first jobs start with a short in-person casting or a quick video call. Go in prepared and you already stand out.
- Your phone with your profile ready to show
- A printed comp card, or a link to your comp card PDF
- Plain fitted clothes and a neutral pair of shoes
- Any outfit the casting asked for
- Water and a small snack, since castings can run late
- Basic grooming kit, such as a comb, lip balm and blotting paper
Arrive ten minutes early. Introduce yourself with your name and nothing else unless asked. Listen to direction and try it right away. If they ask for a natural laugh, do not overthink it. A casting is about how you take direction, not about a perfect first try.
A legitimate casting happens in a professional or public place, such as a studio, an office or a hotel lobby. You can bring a friend. Read our model safety guide before any in-person meeting.
First jobs pay real money when the scope is clear
Pay depends on job type, city and usage. These are general market guidance ranges seen in many US markets, not fixed prices.
- E-commerce shoots often pay $50 to $150 per hour, or a half-day or full-day rate.
- Small commercial lifestyle shoots commonly pay $300 to $1,000 for a day.
- UGC videos commonly pay $75 to $150 each for newer creators, with extra for paid ad usage.
- Promotional event work often pays $25 to $60 per hour.
Usage rights change the price. A photo that runs only on a product page is a smaller job than a photo that runs in paid ads for a year. On PostModels, usage rights are set per casting and written into the booking agreement, so you know what you agreed to.
Booking payments through PostModels are held by the platform and released to your payout account after the job. If you want flexible work around another job, look at freelance modeling jobs and promotional modeling jobs, which are often short and local.
Real clients never ask you to pay them
New models are the main target for fake castings. The rule is simple. You never pay a client to get a job.
- A "client" asks for a fee for a portfolio, a test shoot, a course or a registration.
- The job pays far above normal rates for very little work.
- They want to move the chat off the platform right away.
- The casting is in a private home or a hotel room.
- The brief is vague about the product, usage or pay.
- They ask for nude, lingerie or swimwear photos.
On PostModels, brands are verified and pay a subscription, which filters out most fake castings. Every casting and profile has a Report button. Adults only, no nudity and no erotic content, ever.
